The North Canterbury Kids Hunt is open to all children up to and including 16 years of age. We welcome entries from all over New Zealand but you must be at weigh in to claim a prize.
Adults holding a current firearms license can shoot the animal on behalf of the child as long as the child is with you on the hunting adventure it will qualify. Please stay safe and use your common-sense.
The idea of this event is to bring families/friends together and make it a learning experience of the great outdoors.
The Prize Categories

Bring the family along and join us for a fun-filled day including bouncy castles, home and school BBQ, cold drinks, a bake sale, coffee cart, ice cream and some exciting prizes and raffles to be won on the day.
North Canterbury Kids Hunt and Tihiraki North Loburn School take no responsibility for injury or incidents during the duration of the event. The participants enter the competition at their own risk.
Weigh in to be held at Loburn Domain on the 18th May 2025 11am-2pm.
Only open to children 16yrs and under.
All children must be supervised by an adult when hunting.
All children must be present on the hunt of the animals entered.
No commercial operators.
All hunters are required to abide by the Firearms Act 1983 and future amendments.
The Animals
All animals must be feral and killed humanely.
Any animals deemed by the judges to be taken outside stated times, frozen or farmed will be disqualified.
All animals must have testicles and ears attached naturally.
Deer, pigs and goats must be weighed in less offal.
All other animals must be weighed in whole.
Possums, please ensure there are no joeys in the pouches.
If animals have equal weights, the prize goes to the first animal weighed in.
Any entrant bringing in rabbits or possums suspected of being poisoned will be disqualified.
An independent meat inspector will be present.
The Weigh in
Once the animal has been weighed and tagged you may take the animal home.
ALL animals must be taken home with you after prize giving with the exemption of possums.
The judge’s decision will be final, no discussion will be entered into.
No late or phone entries.
No BYO alcohol on premises at weigh-in.
The Prizes
All paid entries will go in the draw for the major spot prize. (You must be present or it will be redrawn).
You must be there to collect your prize or it will be redrawn.
Only one prize may be claimed per person per category.
Some prizes must be collected with an adult or guardian present.
