Tihiraki North Loburn School is a country school located in North Canterbury. Our vision is to nurture well rounded citizens of the future with a lifelong passion for learning
About our School
Tihiraki North Loburn School is proud to be a small rural school nestled amongst lifestyle blocks and farmland, 15 minutes northwest of Rangiora. We are a contributing primary school of approximately 100 students from Years 0-8. We have children who love to learn, a professional and passionate staff, and a warm and supportive community.
Established in 1880, the school has a long history and association with the farming community. Our war memorial bears the names of past pupils and is a poignant reminder of the history steeped in our school which we take time to recognise each year in our own Anzac Service. In more recent times our school has been gifted the name ‘Tihiraki’ from Ngāi Tahu. ‘Tihiraki’ means summit and we feel this is a wonderful fit for our school, as not only does it reference Maukatere and Mt Thomas, our local maunga, but also reflects the high expectations we have of our students.

At Tihiraki North Loburn School our PRIDE Values are the building blocks of our learning culture that has grown and cemented over many years. These values are apparent in our classrooms and playground and are evident in the ways students, staff and whānau work together. We live and breathe them! As a Positive Behaviour for Learning school, explicit teaching and recognition of these values in authentic situations is key to an inclusive and effective learning environment.
At Tihiraki North Loburn School we value the community feel of our school and the mantra ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. The kaiako at Tihiraki are all invested in our children’s well-being and support the learning of all ākonga. We have high expectations of both students and staff, and pride ourselves on knowing our learners well and therefore being able to support their learning journey effectively.
We are proud of the countless opportunities our students have and how these experiences help develop the ‘well rounded students’ our vision strives to nurture.
Garden to Table
We are holding our North Canterbury Kids Hunt to raise funds for Tihiraki North Loburn School which will go towards our Garden to Table and Paddock to Plate programs
North Loburn Schools Garden to Table programme has evolved to become an integral part of our weekly curriculum and a wonderful way to connect with our community. Running alongside this programme, Tihiraki North Loburn School has also developed a Paddock to Plate programme where meat is included in the menu. Students explore a range of animal protein, its preparation and the importance of good animal husbandry, reflecting our rural community.
Garden to Table aligns with our sustainable values as a school with a Green Gold Enviroschool status. It allows our students to work alongside members of our community, from parents and helpers to local food producers. As a small school in a rural community, we place a lot of emphasis on environmental and sustainable education.
